Cap Identification & Fitting Guide
Part Number Explanation
Each Gates fuel cap part number consists of five digits,
the last digit refers to whether the cap is meant for fuel
tanks with resp, without ventilation or whether it is an
ecological construction
e.g. 1022[1] Vented Cap
1022[2] Non Vented Cap
1022[3] Ecological Cap [EEC Safety Standard 70/221] full

Ventilation [breathing]
1. A tank carrying ventilation though the filler neck requires
a sealed cap [Non Vented]
2. A Tank without ventilation device requires a breathing
cap [Vented Cap or a Cap with a breathing Valve]
As a consequence of the above, the two types of cap look
the same as to size and working, except for the ventilation.
Make sure you choose the right cap and carefully read the
manufactures instructions

Bayonet Caps
1. Place the cap on the filler neck, making sure the lugs
correctly fit the slots of the filler neck
2. Rotate the key 90 degrees clockwise and remove it
3. To undo repeat stage two in reverse action
Screw Type Caps
1. Screw it tightly on to the filler
2. Insert the key, turn it 180 degrees clockwise [half a
turn] & remove it
3. After this operation the cap idles, and therefore it
cannot be unscrewed
4. To open, repeat stage two, but rest a finger on the cap
to prevent it moving |
